A-1 Custom Moldings and Millwork

Something as simple as crown molding or a chair rail can turn an average room into something inspiring.

Like diamond earrings set off a beautiful dress, so too does molding and millwork accentuate a room. Something as simple as crown molding or a chair rail can turn an average room into something inspiring. Go a little further with some wainscoting and a fancy base and you have created an elegant atmosphere with the utmost in taste and style.

A-1 Custom Design provides you with architectural moldings, both stock and custom-made. We provide a full line of moldings and millwork from the most reputable companies in the nation.

Unique Moldings

If you are looking for something unique we can custom make any profile for any molding. You can have a one-of-a-kind piece that no other home will ever have. We use only the best materials, and you can choose from solid wood, MDF, or synthetic material. Whatever your application, you can trust that A-1 will provide the most beautiful products with the best quality available.

Walls Millwork

Millwork also includes wall coverings, like wainscoting or wood paneling. You can decorate your kitchen, dining room or bath walls by adding beadboard or flat-paneled wainscoting along the bottom of the wall. Wainscoting comes in a variety of types, from raised to flat, and is available in both panels and interlocking formats.

Matching Your Millwork

Matching your existing woodwork is easily achieved. We also provide stain matches to your existing color or help you select a new shade to give your home a new look. We complete the process with a beautiful catalyst matte or satin finish.

Crown Moldings Decoration History

From the beginning of American architecture, crown moldings did not come cheap, because carpenters produced every molding by hand. But after the Civil War, manufacturers used old munitions factories to produce house parts massively, enabling builders to outfit even modest rooms from a catalog of affordable profiles. But then moldings popularity was downed by the high style of late 19 century Queen Anne and Neoclassical houses.

Crown moldings came in favor again in the beginning of 20 century, when builders in the Craftsman style used simple molding as a display of the woods inherent beauty. Famous craftsman of that time Gustav Stickley said that molding makes each room so interesting that it seems complete before a single piece of furniture is put into it. But after World War II, during the American housing boom, crown molding almost eliminated due to minimalism of the Modern style.

But now due to the renovation boom of the past 20 years moldings became very popular again. From boxy to baroque, the options are endless, and homeowners want to add or restore decoration, bringing sophistication and a higher resale value to their homes. Hardware stores and home centers stock popular styles, especially crown moldings, and mills keep the different knives that cut historic profiles ready for the milling machines.
